The hair transplantation healing process

Despite the gentle FUE technique, hair transplantation remains a surgery procedure in which the scalp can be somewhat irritated. By removing and inserting the grafts, skin layers are injured or damaged.

So it is quite normal for the donor area to be inflamed after the hair surgery. Crusts also form while the scalp is healing. Those are unavoidable but there are solutions to support and accelerate the healing process.

Care after the procedure

Immediately after the procedure, the scalp may be a little sore and red. The puncture holes of the hollow needle are visible, whereby the skin looks slightly perforated. After the hair transplant, the donor area needs healing. That is why proper care is very important and should have the highest priority after the procedure.

At the Biohair clinic you will always be provided with a care kit. This consists of a matching headgear, a hair band, special shampoo, lotion, a neck pillow and painkillers. You can use the neck pillow when you go to bed. It is important that the back of the head gets as little contact as possible with the pillow during the night.

It can also happen that the donor area itches after hair transplantation. If this is the case, please do not scratch under any circumstances ! Otherwise, you can damage the newly transplanted hair follicles. This can potentially hurt the final result of the transplantation.

Day 1 after the procedure

Also, after the hair transplant pain in the donor area may occur. Those are fortunately not extreme and subside again after a short time. Again, do not scratch or rub, as it may well be possible that you pull the freshly used grafts directly from the hair channel.

The next day, a slight crust should have formed on both the recipient and donor area. This is normal and part of the healing process. Pay special attention to the donor area after the hair transplant, so that he can recover from the surgery as soon as possible.

This is why at Biohair we strive to always provide a professional follow up for all our patient. You will initially receive all the information you need after the surgery. But we know by experience that it is sometimes hard to recall everything.

Two days after the procedure

Now it’s time for you to wash your hair or scalp. The special shampoo and lotion that we provide help to shorten the healing time after hair transplantation. Those products also ensure that the crusts fall off faster.

First, the lotion is applied to the recipient area by gently tapping it with your fingers. Just make sure that no friction are made. The care product should be used for about 40 minutes during the first hair wash. In the subsequent treatments, the time is reduced to 15 to 20 minutes.

Then wash the scalp with warm water from front to back. Thereafter, the shampoo is carefully applied to the recipient area. This should act for three to five minutes and washed with lukewarm water in the direction of hair growth. Then carefully dry the scalp. However, cotton towels should not be used (risk of lint!).

This washing process, both in the recipient and in the donor area, must be repeated regularly for a period of ten days. In the hair transplant healing process, more or less severe crusts form in both areas. These usually fall off by themselves.

For those who did not fall off by themselves, you need to help them out, as incrustations could potentially damage the outcome. The easiest way to remove the crusts is to rub gently over the scalp from back to front.

What else is there to consider?

Within the first four days you should not do any sports and do not try to do anything physically. Even alcohol and cigarettes are taboo. In addition, the head must be protected from impact as much as possible.

In addition, you should wait six weeks before going to the sauna, solarium or the swimming pool. The same applies to direct sunlight that must be avoided. During the hair transplantation healing process applies: do not scratch!
